When you’re drifting in the bonus zone (the yellow hashed zone on the track) you are earning 50% more points than if you’re drifting outside the bonus zone and you know when you’re in it because your Instant Drift Score turns yellow rather than white. The hashed areas are guidelines only.
However, in some tracks the bonus zones will not give you the best score. For example, Tuki Pa’s first two corners have bonus zones that make it almost impossible to link turns 2, 3 and 4, which is the key to getting a huge score (i.e. above 37,000 rather than 15-18,000). So, experiment with different lines and remember that you are rewarded for keeping a long drift going.
Next to the instant drift score is the multiplier. So in the image above it’s showing that your score so far (assuming you don’t go off the track and cancel out the multiplier) will be 381 x 3. The IDS goes up to 10 and we’ve had drifts as long as around 5000 points (on Wobbarim), so 5000 x 10 = 50,000 and that’s a huge amount to add to the score.
When you see some of the big scores that people are getting, bear in mind that they’re probably linking a lot of drifts together and there’s a special trick to that which is explained in another page.
